Nepal's Electoral Scene Witnesses Significant Alliance Formed By TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable move ahead of the upcoming national polls, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of widespread and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The September uprising was triggered by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding allegations of systemic graft in politics.

Details of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the official agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political leadership. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Wider Political Consultations Underway

In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with several leading political leaders. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.

Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a collective duty. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
